Introduction

Places of an artist

The art of Ozias Leduc is imbued with the spirit of Saint-Hilaire. It has inspired his work to become a unique portrait of the natural, spiritual and imaginary landscape of his time.

Over the years, rumors spread that Ozias Leduc was an isolated artist at the foot of his mountain, far from the world. He was regularly nicknamed "the wise man of Saint-Hilaire" and "the mountain hermit".

Nonetheless, Leduc’s involvement in his community was considerable. He was deeply involved in municipal affairs where he became at one point school counselor and commissioner. He also kept regular contact with intellectuals, artists, architects, friends and acquaintances who visited him in his house-studio which he called Correlieu.

Throughout his life, Leduc wanted to preserve and share the beauty of Saint-Hilaire. It became his "place of the heart", the one that inspired him and allowed him to create.

It will be on these foundations that I will raise the building, may it look a little more like the ideal of purity that everyone has in themselves. - Ozias Leduc

Through the seasons

Sensitive to the seasonal changes that transform the mountain and its environment, Leduc expresses the mystical and symbolic effects he perceives from these locations. His family houses, Correlieu house-studio as well as the transformations these places have undergone over the years reveal the private life of the artist, the places where everyday memories became works of art.
