Correlieu
Creative effervescence
Ozias Leduc's Correlieu house-studio became a legend over the years, not only due to its stunning location at the foot of the mountain, but also because of the presence of Montreal artists and intellectuals who visited him on a regular basis. It gradually becomes a center of intellectual effervescence and creativity.
It's in 1890 that Ozias Leduc undertakes the construction of Correlieu with the help of his father to finally settle there in 1894. "Correlieu", an old expression of maritime origins, refers to staying focused during long voyages by being "at one with the ship".
Correlieu is the place where the heart is in everything and everyone... as well as in friends and their own friends who visit my home. - Ozias Leduc
Correlieu's atmosphere provides Leduc with a meditative environment conducive to the planning of his projects and to the creation of art rich with mysticism, symbolism and poetry.
Although the studio started out as a modest wooden building, Correlieu was expanded when Leduc got married in 1906 in order to transform it into a home where the couple could welcome friends and guests. With an area of 7 meters wide and 8 meters deep, it was divided into a set of several living and working spaces, including a darkroom for photography and a shed used to store paintings not intended for sale and art supplies. Correlieu also had a central workshop, a kitchen and a bedroom, in addition to a small bathroom and large windows that provided Leduc with soft light for painting.
